Cognate with Old English stofa (“bathroom, bathhouse”), stufbæþ (“hot-air bath”), Old High German stuba (whence German Stube), Old Norse stofa (whence Icelandic stofa (“living room”), Norwegian stove, Danish and Norwegian stue and Swedish stuga). The Germanic words are very old, and are the source of the Slavic and Romance terms. It is often speculated that the Germanic terms were borrowed from Vulgar Latin *extūfa, *extūfāre (“to heat with steam”), from Latin ex- + *tūfus (“hot vapor”), from Ancient Greek τῦφος (tûphos, “fever”).\nDoublet of stufa.", "forms": [ { "form": "stoves", "tags": [ "plural" ] } ], "head_templates": [ { "args": {}, "expansion": "stove (plural stoves)", "name": "en-noun" } ], "lang": (compare Dutch stoof, German Low German Stuve, Stuuv), both from Proto-West Germanic *stubu, *stubō, from Proto-Germanic *stubō (“room, living room, heated room”), further origin uncertain. Cognate with Old English stofa (“bathroom, bathhouse”), stufbæþ (“hot-air bath”), Old High German stuba (whence German Stube), Old Norse stofa (whence Icelandic stofa (“living room”), Norwegian stove, Danish and Norwegian stue and Swedish stuga). The Germanic words are very old, and are the source of the Slavic and Romance terms. It is often speculated that the Germanic terms were borrowed from Vulgar Latin *extūfa, *extūfāre (“to heat with steam”), from Latin ex- + *tūfus (“hot vapor”), from Ancient Greek τῦφος (tûphos, “fever”).\nDoublet of stufa.", "forms": [ { "form": "stoves", "tags": [ "present", "singular", "third-person" ] }, { "form": "stoving", "tags": [ "participle", "present" ] }, { "form": "stoved", "tags": [ "participle", "past" ] }, { "form": "stoved", "tags": [ "past" ] } ], "head_templates": [ { "args": {}, "expansion": "stove (third-person singular simple present stoves, present participle stoving, simple past and past participle stoved)", "name": "en-verb" } ], "lang": "English", "lang_code": "en", "pos": "verb", "senses": [ { "categories": [ "English terms with quotations", "English terms with usage examples", "English transitive verbs", "Quotation templates to be cleaned" ], "examples": [ { "text": "to stove feathers", "type": "example" }, { "ref": "1975, William Geoffrey Potter, Uses of Epoxy Resins, page 39:", "text": "The wide use of amine-cured epoxy paints is mostly due to their providing many of the properties of stoved epoxy films from an ambient temperature-cured system.", "type": "quote" } ], "glosses": [ "To heat or dry, as in a stove." ], "links": [ [ "heat", "heat" ], [ "dry", "dry" ] ], "raw_glosses": [ "(transitive) To heat or dry, as in a stove." ], "tags": [ "transitive" ] }, { "categories": [ "English terms with quotations", "English terms with usage examples", "English transitive verbs" ], "examples": [ { "text": "to stove orange trees", "type": "example" }, { "ref": "1625, Francis [Bacon], “Of Gardens”, in The Essayes […], 3rd edition, London: […] Iohn Haviland for Hanna Barret, →OCLC:", "text": "orange-trees , lemon-trees , and myrtles , if they be stoved", "type": "quote" } ], "glosses": [ "To keep warm, in a house or room, by artificial heat." ], "links": [ [ "artificial", "artificial" ], [ "heat", "heat" ] ], "raw_glosses": [ "(transitive) To keep warm, in a house or room, by artificial heat." ], "tags": [ "transitive" ] } ], "sounds": [ { "ipa": "/stəʊv/", "tags": [ "Received-Pronunciation" ] }, { "ipa": "/stoʊv/", "tags": [ "General-American" ] }, { "audio": "en-us-stove.ogg", "mp3_url": "https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/transcoded/b/bc/En-us-stove.ogg/En-us-stove.ogg.mp3", "ogg_url": "https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bc/En-us-stove.ogg" }, { "rhymes": "-əʊv" } ], "translations": [ { "code": "fi", "english": "to heat", "lang": "Finnish", "sense": "to heat or dry", "word": "lämmittää" }, { "code": "fi", "lang": "Finnish", "sense": "to heat or dry", "word": "kuivata" }, { "code": "fi", "lang": "Finnish", "sense": "to heat or dry", "word": "kuivattaa" }, { "code": "fi", "english": "to dry", "lang": "Finnish", "sense": "to heat or dry", "word": "kuivatella" }, { "code": "fi", "lang": "Finnish", "sense": "to keep warm", "word": "lämmitellä" }, { "code": "fi", "lang": "Finnish", "sense": "to keep warm", "word": "lämmittää" } ], "wikipedia": [ "stove" ], "word": "stove" } { "categories": [ "English entries with incorrect language header", "English irregular past participles", "English irregular simple past forms", "English non-lemma forms", "English verb forms", "Pages with 3 entries", "Pages with entries", "Rhymes:English/əʊv", "Rhymes:English/əʊv/1 syllable", "en:Home appliances", "nn:Rooms" ], "etymology_number": 2, "head_templates": [ { "args": { "1": "en", "2": "verb form" }, "expansion": "stove", "name": "head" } ], "lang": "English", "lang_code": "en", "pos": "verb", "senses": [ { "categories": [ "English links with manual fragments", "English terms with quotations" ], "examples": [ { "ref": "1851 November 14, Herman Melville, chapter 7, in Moby-Dick;
