Ultimate origin obscure.\nVariously supposed to derive from a Germanic source like Saterland Frisian Briese (“breeze”), West Frisian brys (“a cool wind”), Dutch bries (“breeze”), early Dutch brysen (“to blow cool and fresh”), or from Spanish brisa (“northeast wind”).\nThe earliest attestations are in Middle English brees (1460), Catalan brisa, and Italian brezza (all in 15th century), with Spanish (1504) and Portuguese briza (16th century) following closely after. The aforementioned Dutch cognates and French brise, however, are attested later than the term in English. The only internal hypothesis for any of those languages is a modification of Old Occitan bisa (“strong wind”), which is not widely accepted.\nCompare also Albanian breshër (“hail”).", "forms": [ { "form": "breezes", "tags": [ "plural" ] } ], "head_templates": [ { "args": {}, "expansion": "breeze (plural breezes)", "name": "en-noun" } ], "lang": "English", "lang_code": "en", "pos": "noun", "senses": [ { "categories": [], "coordinate_terms": [ { "_dis1": "76 2 14 5 3", "sense": "gentle wind", "word": "gale" }, { "_dis1": "76 2 14 5 3", "sense": "gentle wind", "word": "hurricane" }, { "_dis1": "76 2 14 5 3", "sense": "gentle wind", "word": "storm" } ], "examples": [ { "text": "The breeze rustled the papers on her desk.", "type": "example" }, { "ref": "1793, William Wordsworth, An Evening Walk:", "text": "Into a gradual calm the breezes sink.", "type": "quote" }, { "ref": "1907 August, Robert W[illiam] Chambers, “Afterglow”, in The Younger Set, New York, N.Y.: D. (nautical) term brise, brize (“breeze”), from Middle English brees (“wind”). The only internal hypothesis for any of those languages is a modification of Old Occitan bisa (“strong wind”), which is not widely accepted.\nCompare also Albanian breshër (“hail”).", "forms": [ { Ultimate origin obscure.\nVariously supposed to derive from a Germanic source like Saterland Frisian Briese (“breeze”), West Frisian brys (“a cool wind”), Dutch bries (“breeze”), early Dutch brysen (“to blow cool and fresh”), or from Spanish brisa (“northeast wind”).\nThe earliest attestations are in Middle English brees (1460), Catalan brisa, and Italian brezza (all in 15th century), with Spanish (1504) and Portuguese briza (16th century) following closely after. The aforementioned Dutch cognates and French brise, however, are attested later than the term in English. The only internal hypothesis for any of those languages is a modification of Old Occitan bisa (“strong wind”), which is not widely accepted.\nCompare also Albanian breshër (“hail”).", "forms": [ { "form": "breezes", "tags": [ "plural" ] } ], "head_templates": [ { "args": {}, "expansion": "breeze (plural breezes)", "name": "en-noun" } ], "lang": "English", "lang_code": "en", "pos": "noun", "senses": [ { "categories": [ "English terms with quotations", "English terms with usage examples", "Quotation templates to be cleaned" ], "examples": [ { "text": "The breeze rustled the papers on her desk.", "type": "example" }, { "ref": "1793, William Wordsworth, An Evening Walk:", "text": "Into a gradual calm the breezes sink.", "type": "quote" }, { "ref": "1907 August, Robert W[illiam] Chambers, “Afterglow”, in The Younger Set, New York, N.Y.: D. (“breeze”), from Middle English brees (“wind”). The only internal hypothesis for any of those languages is a modification of Old Occitan bisa (“strong wind”), which is not widely accepted.\nCompare also Albanian breshër (“hail”).", "forms": [ { "form": "breezes", "tags": [ "present", "singular", "third-person" ] }, { "form": "breezing", "tags": [ "participle", "present" ] }, { "form": "breezed", "tags": [ "participle", "past" ] }, { "form": "breezed", "tags": [ "past" ] } ], "head_templates": [ { "args": {}, "expansion": "breeze (third-person singular simple present breezes, present participle breezing, simple past and past participle breezed)", "name": "en-verb" } ], "lang": "English", "lang_code": "en", "pos": "verb", "senses": [ { "categories": [ "English terms with quotations" ], "examples": [ { "ref": "2023 October 11, Dafydd Pritchard, “Wales 4-0 Gibraltar”, in BBC Sport:", "text": "Resting most of their first-choice players for Sunday's vital Euro 2024 qualifier against Croatia, Wales started with four debutants and breezed into an early lead thanks to headers by captain Ben Davies and Kieffer Moore.", "type": "quote" } ], "glosses": [ "To move casually, in a carefree manner." ], "raw_glosses": [ "(usually with along) To move casually, in a carefree manner." ], "raw_tags": [ "with along" ], "tags": [ "intransitive", "usually" ] }, { "categories": [ "English terms with quotations", "en:Weather" ], "examples": [ { "ref": "2014 January 21, Hermione Hoby, “Julia Roberts interview for August: Osage County – 'I might actually go to hell for this ...': Julia Roberts reveals why her violent, Oscar-nominated performance in August: Osage County made her feel 'like a terrible person' [print version: 'I might actually go to hell for this ...'
