Verb

Etymology: The origin of this word is not entirely clear. It has been compared with Ancient Greek κεντέω (kentéō, “to prick, to pierce”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱent- (“to pierce”): its zero grade *ḱn̥t would have yielded Proto-Baltic *šint-, whence Latvian sīt-, probably the stem of archaic term sīts (“hunting spear”). This hypothesis, however, does not explain the short i in the present stem sit- (with the s in the infinitive from *sit-ti > sist). A possibly better hypothesis is to derive sist from Proto-Indo-European *sey- (“to stretch one's arm; tension, strength”): its zero grade *si- would have yielded Proto-Baltic *sit- with an extra t, whence sit-ti > sist. The meaning would have changed from “to flex one's muscles” to “to use one's muscles (to hit),” whence “to hit.” Etymology templates: {{cog|grc|κεντέω||to prick, to pierce}} Ancient Greek κεντέω (kentéō, “to prick, to pierce”), {{der|lv|ine-pro|*ḱent-||to pierce}} Proto-Indo-European *ḱent- (“to pierce”), {{der|lv|bat-pro|-}} Proto-Baltic, {{cog|lv|sīt-}} Latvian sīt-, {{der|lv|ine-pro|*sey-||to stretch one's arm; tension, strength}} Proto-Indo-European *sey- (“to stretch one's arm; tension, strength”), {{der|lv|bat-pro|-}} Proto-Baltic Head templates: {{head|lv|verb|transitive or intransitive||1st conjugation||||||present|situ, sit, sit|past|situ|head=sist}} sist (transitive or intransitive, 1st conjugation, present situ, sit, sit, past situ), {{lv-verb|tr-intr|1st|sit|sit||sit}} sist (transitive or intransitive, 1st conjugation, present situ, sit, sit, past situ) Inflection templates: {{lv-conj|si|sit|1st|sit||sit|ī|s/t|width=480}}, {{lv-conj-1|si|sit|sit||sit|ī|s/t|inf=|kc=|pass=|pol=|prespart=|refl=|stem2=|sz=|width=100%|zstd=t}}, {{lv-conj-table|situ|sit|sit|sitam|sitat|situ|siti|sita|sitām|sitāt|sitīšu|sitīsi|sitīs|sitīsim|sitīsiet, sitīsit|sit|sitiet|sitot|sitīšot|sistu|jāsit|jāsitot|sitošs|sizdams|sitot|sitam|sitis|sitams|sists|sišana|inf=|pass=|pol=|prespart=|refl=|width=100%}} Forms: conjugation [first-person], situ [present], sit [present], situ [past], no-table-tags [table-tags], situ [first-person, indicative, present, singular], situ [first-person, indicative, past, singular], sitīšu [first-person, future, indicative, singular], - [first-person, imperative, singular], sit [indicative, present, second-person, singular], siti [indicative, past, second-person, singular], sitīsi [future, indicative, second-person, singular], sit [imperative, second-person, singular], sit [indicative, present, singular, third-person], sita [indicative, past, singular, third-person], sitīs [future, indicative, singular, third-person], lai sit [imperative, singular, third-person], sitam [first-person, indicative, plural, present], sitām [first-person, indicative, past, plural], sitīsim [first-person, future, indicative, plural], sitīsim [first-person, imperative, plural], sitat [indicative, plural, present, second-person], sitāt [indicative, past, plural, second-person], sitīsiet [future, indicative, plural, second-person], sitīsit [future, indicative, plural, second-person], sitiet [imperative, plural, second-person], sit [indicative, plural, present, third-person], sita [indicative, past, plural, third-person], sitīs [future, indicative, plural, third-person], lai sit [imperative, plural, third-person], sitot [present, renarrative], sitošs [active, adjectival, participle, participle-1, present], esot sitis [past, renarrative], sizdams [active, adverbial, participle, participle-2, present], sitīšot [future, renarrative], sitot [active, adverbial, participle, participle-3, present], lai sitot [imperative], sitam [active, participle, participle-4, present], sitis [active, participle, past], sistu [conditional, present], sitams [participle, passive, present], būtu sitis [conditional, past], sists [participle, passive, past], jāsit [debitive, indicative], būt jāsit [debitive, indicative], sist [infinitive], esot jāsit [conjunctive, conjunctive-1, debitive], nesist [infinitive, negative], jāsitot [conjunctive, conjunctive-2, debitive], sišana [noun-from-verb]

"etymology_text": "The origin of this word is not entirely clear. The meaning would have changed from “to flex one's muscles” to “to use one's muscles (to hit),” whence “to hit.”",
