Les formes en -fier sont issues de composés latins en -fico, -ficare (→ voir magnifier, modifier, rectifier et terrifier). La langue s’étant habituée, dans les composés latins, à la présence d’un -i-, a fait -ifier, beaucoup plus fréquent dans la construction de composés, laissant à -fier le soin de suffixer les verbes dont le radical se termine par un i. Le suffixe -ifier a parfois supplanté l’original latin, on a ainsi bon-ifier en remplacement de bene-facio et on a conservé bénéfique, de beneficus."
