Verb [Lithuanian]

IPA: [ˈkʊrʲtʲɪ]
Etymology: From Proto-Indo-European *kʷr̥- (“to do, make, build”), probably via an extension *kʷr̥H- in order to account for the acute tone in the Baltic forms. Cognates include Latvian kur̃t (“to light, kindle”) and Sanskrit कृणोति (kṛṇóti, “to injure, do, make”). The appurtenance of the "kindle, light" meanings to the root *kʷr̥- is uncertain. It is traditionally accepted and explained as originating from expressions such as ùgnį kùrti (“to light a fire”); however, it could very well come from a different root, usually reconstructed as Proto-Indo-European *kerh₃- (“heat, fire; to burn”). In this case, compare Lithuanian kárštas (“hot”), Russian кури́ть (kurítʹ, “to smoke”), Latin carbō m (“charcoal”), and Old Norse hyrr m (“fire”). "etymology_text": "From Proto-Indo-European *kʷr̥- (“to do, make, build”), probably via an extension *kʷr̥H- in order to account for the acute tone in the Baltic forms. Cognates include Latvian kur̃t (“to light, kindle”) and Sanskrit कृणोति (kṛṇóti, “to injure, do, make”).\nThe appurtenance of the \"kindle, light\" meanings to the root *kʷr̥- is uncertain. It is traditionally accepted and explained as originating from expressions such as ùgnį kùrti (“to light a fire”); however, it could very well come from a different root, usually reconstructed as Proto-Indo-European *kerh₃- (“heat, fire; to burn”). In this case, compare Lithuanian kárštas (“hot”), Russian кури́ть (kurítʹ, “to smoke”), Latin carbō m (“charcoal”), and Old Norse hyrr m (“fire”).",
