Das durch Kolumbus um 1500 vermittelte spanische maíz ^(→ es) gelangte in die europäischen Sprachen. Das Wort wird mit der Sache in Deutschland eingeführt, nachdem diese zunächst seit dem 16. Jahrhundert als »Welschkorn«, »Türkisch Korn« oder »Türkischer Weizen« bezeichnet worden war (vergleiche englisch Indian corn ^(→ en)): Mit der Herkunftsbezeichnung »indisch« ist ‚westindisch‘ gemeint, die jedoch später missverstanden wurde; »türkisch« stand zur Zeit der Bezeichnung für ‚asiatisch‘ und spiegelt dieses Missverständnis wider; »welsch« stand hier einfach für ‚fremd‘ Diese Bezeichnungen haben sich bis heute noch landschaftlich gehalten. Ab dem 16. Jahrhundert sind dann auch Formen wie mahis, Maytz, Maiz, Mays sowie, in der botanischen Fachsprache, Maizum, Maiz und Mays Indicum bezeugt. Die Schreibweise Mais ist seit dem 17. Das durch Kolumbus um 1500 vermittelte spanische maíz ^(→ es) gelangte in die europäischen Sprachen. Das Wort wird mit der Sache in Deutschland eingeführt, nachdem diese zunächst seit dem 16. Jahrhundert als »Welschkorn«, »Türkisch Korn« oder »Türkischer Weizen« bezeichnet worden war (vergleiche englisch Indian corn ^(→ en)): Mit der Herkunftsbezeichnung »indisch« ist ‚westindisch‘ gemeint, die jedoch später missverstanden wurde; »türkisch« stand zur Zeit der Bezeichnung für ‚asiatisch‘ und spiegelt dieses Missverständnis wider; »welsch« stand hier einfach für ‚fremd‘ Diese Bezeichnungen haben sich bis heute noch landschaftlich gehalten. Ab dem 16. Jahrhundert sind dann auch Formen wie mahis, Maytz, Maiz, Mays sowie, in der botanischen Fachsprache, Maizum, Maiz und Mays Indicum bezeugt. Die Schreibweise Mais ist seit dem 17.
