Verb [Low German]

Etymology: From Middle Low German *splissen. Cognate with Middle Dutch splissen, Saterland Frisian splisje. From the root of Proto-Germanic *splītaną, whence also Low German splitten and splieten. The -ss- is of uncertain origin; if very old, it may be from Pre-Germanic *-d-t-. Both in Dutch and Low German, a compromise form splitsen, splitzen was later built, whence Danish splidse, Swedish splitsa (but also older splissa).
