Noun [Malay]

IPA: /ɡunteŋ/ [Johor-Selangor], /ɡuntɪŋ/ [Riau-Lingga] Forms: ݢونتيڠ [Jawi], gunting-gunting [plural], guntingku [first-person, informal, possessive], guntingmu [possessive, second-person], guntingnya [possessive, third-person]
Rhymes: -untiŋ, -tiŋ, -iŋ Etymology: Blust (2010-2020) posits that, "The history of this word is still obscure. It is almost certainly a loan from some non-Austronesian source, and its distribution in most languages, including all those of the Philippines and eastern Indonesia, probably is a product of borrowing from Malay. However, it is also found in Old Javanese texts that are centuries old, and its application to terms in carpentry (Bikol) and house construction (Asilulu) raises questions about a possible earlier meaning that was later transferred to scissors once these were introduced. Despite the improbability of it being native, Dempwolff (1938) posited ‘Uraustronesisch’(Proto-Austronesian) *guntiŋ ‘scissors’, and Mills (1975) posited Proto-South Sulawesi *gun(tc)iŋ ‘shears; to cut’. (Blust posits that) The most likely source of this word, which shows irregular sound correspondences in several languages, is some southern form of Chinese, but this is yet to be confirmed. The use of scissors presumably spread widely within a short time because they offered a far more convenient means of cutting hair than was previously possible with the use of single straight blades, as with knives." Noun [Tagalog]

IPA: /ɡunˈtiŋ/ [Standard-Tagalog], [ɡʊnˈtiŋ] [Standard-Tagalog] Forms: guntíng [canonical], ᜄᜓᜈ᜔ᜆᜒᜅ᜔ [Baybayin]
Rhymes: -iŋ Etymology: Likely from Malay gunting, ultimately likely a loan from some non-Austronesian source, such as Chinese [Term?], according to Blust (2010–). Compare Bikol Central gunting, Cebuano gunting, Hiligaynon gunting, Laboya gutti, and Mansaka gonting and Tausug gunting.
Manuel (1948) also wondered about gunting if it is from Chinese or originally traces back to Proto-Austronesian, which Dr. Cecilio Lopez stoutly affirmed from Dempwolff's findings, although problems arose as the word is not found in the languages of the Igorot groups, which the only tenable conclusion was that gunting is not originally from Proto-Austronesian but instead from “Southeastern Chinese” (see Min Chinese languages, including Hokkien) which had a term for scissors from which most probably the original term was derived from.

"etymology_text": "Blust (2010-2020) posits that, \"The history of this word is still obscure. It is almost certainly a loan from some non-Austronesian source, and its distribution in most languages, including all those of the Philippines and eastern Indonesia, probably is a product of borrowing from Malay. However, it is also found in Old Javanese texts that are centuries old, and its application to terms in carpentry (Bikol) and house construction (Asilulu) raises questions about a possible earlier meaning that was later transferred to scissors once these were introduced.\nDespite the improbability of it being native, Dempwolff (1938) posited ‘Uraustronesisch’(Proto-Austronesian) *guntiŋ ‘scissors’, and Mills (1975) posited Proto-South Sulawesi *gun(tc)iŋ ‘shears; to cut’. (Blust posits that) The most likely source of this word, which shows irregular sound correspondences in several languages, is some southern form of Chinese, but this is yet to be confirmed. The use of scissors presumably spread widely within a short time because they offered a far more convenient means of cutting hair than was previously possible with the use of single straight blades, as with knives.\"",

"etymology_text": "Likely from Malay gunting, ultimately likely a loan from some non-Austronesian source, such as Chinese [Term?], according to Blust (2010–). Compare Bikol Central gunting, Cebuano gunting, Hiligaynon gunting, Laboya gutti, and Mansaka gonting and Tausug gunting.\n\nManuel (1948) also wondered about gunting if it is from Chinese or originally traces back to Proto-Austronesian, which Dr. Cecilio Lopez stoutly affirmed from Dempwolff's findings, although problems arose as the word is not found in the languages of the Igorot groups, which the only tenable conclusion was that gunting is not originally from Proto-Austronesian but instead from “Southeastern Chinese” (see Min Chinese languages, including Hokkien) which had a term for scissors from which most probably the original term was derived from.",
