Adjective [Latvian]

IPA: [ʒīɾkts]
Etymology: From a (no longer extant) verb žirgt (“to liven up, to fresehn up”) (the r follows the pattern of stingt (“to harden, stiffen”), stingrs (“firm, strong, strict”)), from Proto-Baltic *žirgt(e)y, from *žerg-, *žirg-, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (“to shine, to glow”) with an extra -g (without this -g, this stem yielded Lithuanian žìrti (“to sparkle”)). In Latvian, the Proto-Baltic initial ž was conserved, maybe for onomatopoeic expressive reasons; note that the (possibly) related term zirgs (“horse”) has the expected initial z. The meaning changed from “(that which) shines, glows” to “happy, cheerful, joyous” and finally “lively, brisk, alert.” Etymology templates: {{m|lv|žirgt||to liven up, to fresehn up}} žirgt (“to liven up, to fresehn up”), {{m|lv|stingt||to harden, stiffen}} stingt (“to harden, stiffen”), {{m|lv|stingrs||firm, strong, strict}} stingrs (“firm, strong, strict”), {{inh|lv|bat-pro|*žirgt(e)y}} Proto-Baltic *žirgt(e)y, {{m|ine-bsl-pro|*žerg-}} *žerg-, {{m|ine-bsl-pro|*žirg-}} *žirg-, {{inh|lv|ine-pro|*ǵʰer-||to shine, to glow}} Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (“to shine, to glow”), {{cog|lt|žìrti||to sparkle}} Lithuanian žìrti (“to sparkle”), {{m|lv|zirgs||horse}} zirgs (“horse”) Head templates: {{head|lv|adjective|||definite|žirgtais|comparative|žirgtāks|superlative|visžirgtākais|adverb|žirgti|cat2=|cat3=}} žirgts (definite žirgtais, comparative žirgtāks, superlative visžirgtākais, adverb žirgti), {{lv-adj|žirgt}} žirgts (definite žirgtais, comparative žirgtāks, superlative visžirgtākais, adverb žirgti) Inflection templates: {{lv-decl-adj|žirgt|extrawidth=-100}} Forms: žirgtais [definite], žirgtāks [comparative], visžirgtākais [superlative], žirgti [adverb], no-table-tags [table-tags], žirgts [indefinite, masculine, nominative, singular], žirgti [indefinite, masculine, nominative, plural], žirgta [feminine, indefinite, nominative, singular], žirgtas [feminine, indefinite, nominative, plural], žirgtu [accusative, indefinite, masculine, singular], žirgtus [accusative, indefinite, masculine, plural], žirgtu [accusative, feminine, indefinite, singular], žirgtas [accusative, feminine, indefinite, plural], žirgta [genitive, indefinite, masculine, singular], žirgtu [genitive, indefinite, masculine, plural], žirgtas [feminine, genitive, indefinite, singular], žirgtu [feminine, genitive, indefinite, plural], žirgtam [dative, indefinite, masculine, singular], žirgtiem [dative, indefinite, masculine, plural], žirgtai [dative, feminine, indefinite, singular], žirgtām [dative, feminine, indefinite, plural], žirgtu [indefinite, instrumental, masculine, singular], žirgtiem [indefinite, instrumental, masculine, plural], žirgtu [feminine, indefinite, instrumental, singular], žirgtām [feminine, indefinite, instrumental, plural], žirgtā [indefinite, locative, masculine, singular], žirgtos [indefinite, locative, masculine, plural], žirgtā [feminine, indefinite, locative, singular], žirgtās [feminine, indefinite, locative, plural], - [indefinite, masculine, singular, vocative], - [indefinite, masculine, plural, vocative], - [feminine, indefinite, singular, vocative], - [feminine, indefinite, plural, vocative]

"etymology_text": "From a (no longer extant) verb žirgt (“to liven up, to fresehn up”) (the r follows the pattern of stingt (“to harden, stiffen”), stingrs (“firm, strong, strict”)), from Proto-Baltic *žirgt(e)y, from *žerg-, *žirg-, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (“to shine, to glow”) with an extra -g (without this -g, this stem yielded Lithuanian žìrti (“to sparkle”)). In Latvian, the Proto-Baltic initial ž was conserved, maybe for onomatopoeic expressive reasons; note that the (possibly) related term zirgs (“horse”) has the expected initial z. The meaning changed from “(that which) shines, glows” to “happy, cheerful, joyous” and finally “lively, brisk, alert.”",
