Noun [Romanian]

IPA: [ˈstrunɡə]
Etymology: Possibly a substrate word from a Paleo-Balkan language within the linguistic area of Proto-Romanian and solely identifiable as Thraco-Dacian *στροῦνγα (*stroῦnga, “tightened, narrowed, strung”) due to comprising all Thracian, Dacian, Moesian and Getean and thus imaginable language territories in its phylum position but, regarding any meaning, the root has also been phonetically improbably related to Thracian *στρουμάν (*stroumán, “stream”). The latter can be deduced from the Ancient Greek river name Στρυμών (Strumṓn, “Strymon”). Perhaps cognate to Latvian strùoga (“alleyway, forest path”), which points at a Thraco-Dacian origin on grounds of sound changes common with general Baltic and lexicosimilarities established. Alternatively, borrowed from Albanian shtrungë (an early form of it before postalveolarization). Maybe related to or derived from strung (“lathe”) with great semantic difficulties that may not be overcome. Compare Aromanian strungã. "etymology_text": "Possibly a substrate word from a Paleo-Balkan language within the linguistic area of Proto-Romanian and solely identifiable as Thraco-Dacian *στροῦνγα (*stroῦnga, “tightened, narrowed, strung”) due to comprising all Thracian, Dacian, Moesian and Getean and thus imaginable language territories in its phylum position but, regarding any meaning, the root has also been phonetically improbably related to Thracian *στρουμάν (*stroumán, “stream”). Compare Aromanian strungã.",
