Verb [Latvian]

IPA: [kustɛ̂ːt] Audio: lv-riga-kustēt.ogg
Etymology: From an older infinitive *kusēt, originally the iterative form of an older verb *kust (“to stir, to move”) (from which the t, especially from the third-person form, also kust, was transferred to *kusēt, yielding kustēt) — which has disappeared, perhaps because of homophony with kust (“to melt, to become soft, liquid”) and kust (“to grow tired, weak”), all ultimately from the same original stem —, from Proto-Baltic *kuš-, from Proto-Indo-European *kewḱ-, *kuḱ- (“to boil, to run over, to effervesce, to ferment”), from the stem *ḱew-, *kew- (“to swell”). The original meaning of kustēt referred thus to movement related to boiling, foaming, or fermenting, which was analogically extended to the movements of little animals and insects (“to teem”), later to those of other animals (cf. kustonis “animal,” originally “insect”), and finally to motion in general. Cognates include dialectal Latvian kuštė́ti (“to move”), kùšti (“to twist, to stir, to move suddenly”), kušė́ti (“to swarm, to teem, to move around”), Russian куше́ть (kušétʹ, “to teem, to swarm”), Ancient Greek κυκάω (kukáō, “to stir up, to mix”) Etymology templates: {{m|lv|*kusēt}} *kusēt, {{m|lv|*kust||to stir, to move}} *kust (“to stir, to move”), {{m|lv|kust}} kust, {{m|lv|*kusēt}} *kusēt, {{m|lv|kustēt}} kustēt, {{m|lv|kust||to melt, to become soft, liquid}} kust (“to melt, to become soft, liquid”), {{m|lv|kust||to grow tired, weak}} kust (“to grow tired, weak”), {{uder|lv|bat-pro|*kuš-}} Proto-Baltic *kuš-, {{uder|lv|ine-pro|*kewḱ-}} Proto-Indo-European *kewḱ-, {{m|ine-pro|*kuḱ-||to boil, to run over, to effervesce, to ferment}} *kuḱ- (“to boil, to run over, to effervesce, to ferment”), {{m|ine-pro|*ḱew-}} *ḱew-, {{m|ine-pro|*kew-||to swell}} *kew- (“to swell”), {{m|lv|kustēt}} kustēt, {{m|lv|kustonis}} kustonis, {{cog|lv|kuštė́ti||to move}} Latvian kuštė́ti (“to move”), {{m|lt|kùšti||to twist, to stir, to move suddenly}} kùšti (“to twist, to stir, to move suddenly”), {{m|lt|kušė́ti||to swarm, to teem, to move around}} kušė́ti (“to swarm, to teem, to move around”), {{cog|ru|куше́ть||to teem, to swarm}} Russian куше́ть (kušétʹ, “to teem, to swarm”), {{cog|grc|κυκάω||to stir up, to mix}} Ancient Greek κυκάω (kukáō, “to stir up, to mix”) Head templates: {{head|lv|verb|intransitive||3rd conjugation||||||present|kustu, kusti, kust|past|kustēju|head=kustēt}} kustēt (intransitive, 3rd conjugation, present kustu, kusti, kust, past kustēju), {{lv-verb|intr|3rd|kust|ē}} kustēt (intransitive, 3rd conjugation, present kustu, kusti, kust, past kustēju) Inflection templates: {{lv-conj|kust|ē|3rd|width=470}}, {{lv-conj-3|kust|ē|||inf=|irr1=|pass=|pol=|prespart=|refl=|stem1=kust|width=100%}}, {{lv-conj-table|kustu|kusti|kust|kustam|kustat|kustēju|kustēji|kustēja|kustējām|kustējāt|kustēšu|kustēsi|kustēs|kustēsim|kustēsiet, kustēsit|kusti|kustiet|kustot|kustēšot|kustētu|jākust|jākustot|kustošs|kustēdams|kustot|kustam|kustējis|kustams|kustēts|kustēšana|inf=|pass=|pol=|prespart=|refl=|width=100%}} Forms: conjugation [third-person], kustu [present], kusti [present], kust [present], kustēju [past], no-table-tags [table-tags], kustu [first-person, indicative, present, singular], kustēju [first-person, indicative, past, singular], kustēšu [first-person, future, indicative, singular], - [first-person, imperative, singular], kusti [indicative, present, second-person, singular], kustēji [indicative, past, second-person, singular], kustēsi [future, indicative, second-person, singular], kusti [imperative, second-person, singular], kust [indicative, present, singular, third-person], kustēja [indicative, past, singular, third-person], kustēs [future, indicative, singular, third-person], lai kust [imperative, singular, third-person], kustam [first-person, indicative, plural, present], kustējām [first-person, indicative, past, plural], kustēsim [first-person, future, indicative, plural], kustēsim [first-person, imperative, plural], kustat [indicative, plural, present, second-person], kustējāt [indicative, past, plural, second-person], kustēsiet [future, indicative, plural, second-person], kustēsit [future, indicative, plural, second-person], kustiet [imperative, plural, second-person], kust [indicative, plural, present, third-person], kustēja [indicative, past, plural, third-person], kustēs [future, indicative, plural, third-person], lai kust [imperative, plural, third-person], kustot [present, renarrative], kustošs [active, adjectival, participle, participle-1, present], esot kustējis [past, renarrative], kustēdams [active, adverbial, participle, participle-2, present], kustēšot [future, renarrative], kustot [active, adverbial, participle, participle-3, present], lai kustot [imperative], kustam [active, participle, participle-4, present], kustējis [active, participle, past], kustētu [conditional, present], kustams [participle, passive, present], būtu kustējis [conditional, past], kustēts [participle, passive, past], jākust [debitive, indicative], būt jākust [debitive, indicative], kustēt [infinitive], esot jākust [conjunctive, conjunctive-1, debitive], nekustēt [infinitive, negative], jākustot [conjunctive, conjunctive-2, debitive], kustēšana [noun-from-verb]

"etymology_text": "From an older infinitive *kusēt, originally the iterative form of an older verb *kust (“to stir, to move”) (from which the t, especially from the third-person form, also kust, was transferred to *kusēt, yielding kustēt) — which has disappeared, perhaps because of homophony with kust (“to melt, to become soft, liquid”) and kust (“to grow tired, weak”), all ultimately from the same original stem —, from Proto-Baltic *kuš-, from Proto-Indo-European *kewḱ-, *kuḱ- (“to boil, to run over, to effervesce, to ferment”), from the stem *ḱew-, *kew- (“to swell”). The original meaning of kustēt referred thus to movement related to boiling, foaming, or fermenting, which was analogically extended to the movements of little animals and insects (“to teem”), later to those of other animals (cf. kustonis “animal,” originally “insect”), and finally to motion in general. Cognates include dialectal Latvian kuštė́ti (“to move”), kùšti (“to twist, to stir, to move suddenly”), kušė́ti (“to swarm, to teem, to move around”), Russian куше́ть (kušétʹ, “to teem, to swarm”), Ancient Greek κυκάω (kukáō, “to stir up, to mix”)",
