    "Le Dictionnaire étymologique latin explique : On trouve souvent caussa dans les inscriptions. C’était, au témoignage de Quintilien, l’orthographe de Cicéron et de Virgile. Le maintien de l’« s » entre deux voyelles prouve d’ailleurs que causa est pour caussa, autrement il se serait changé en *caura → voir cura qui faisait coisa. Pour des explications détaillées sur le rhotacisme en latin, voir « r » en latin.. Ce mot, qui a fini par prendre un sens très général, puisqu'il a donné nos deux mots français cause et chose, a été à l’origine un terme de droit : causa était l’affaire qu'on plaidait devant le tribunal. De là causari, accusare, etc. II vient probablement de caveo (« être sur ses gardes », « décréter, stipuler, défendre »).
