C’est ce qui apparaît par l’ombrien, où sus felius est un cochon de lait (v. Breal, Tables Eugubines, p. 116). L’étymologie nous est révélée du même coup : felius est un adjectif dérivé de *fela « le sein » (→ voir fello et femina). Le [e] s’est changé en [i] comme dans subtilis venant de tela, dans mantilium pour *mantelium. Une pareille extension de sens s’observe en français pour le mot enfant, qui d’après l’étymologie ne devrait s’employer que pour le premier âge."
