Noun

IPA: [mʲi] Forms: [canonical] (ruby: ()), mi [romanization]
Etymology: From Old Japanese 箕 (mi₂), perhaps from earlier Proto-Japonic *mui, which was loaned into Ainu ムイ (mui) and possibly Proto-Ryukyuan *m(u)i, whence Kunigami 箕笊筒 (muijōkī) and Miyako 箕 (mui). In the Man'yōshū, this was used to phonetically write Old Japanese ⟨mi₂⟩. This word had once referred to a squared winnowing basket which originated in northern China and was imported to Japan from Korea. However, the exact source of this word is unknown. Etymology templates: {{inh|ja|ojp|箕|sort=み|tr=mi₂}} Old Japanese 箕 (mi₂), {{inh|ja|jpx-pro|*mui|sort=み}} Proto-Japonic *mui, {{cog|ain|ムイ|sort=み|tr=mui}} Ainu ムイ (mui), {{cog|jpx-ryu-pro|*m(u)i|sort=み}} Proto-Ryukyuan *m(u)i, {{cog|xug|箕笊筒|sort=み|tr=muijōkī}} Kunigami 箕笊筒 (muijōkī), {{cog|mvi|箕|sort=み|tr=mui}} Miyako 箕 (mui), {{m+|ojp|-|w=1}} Old Japanese, {{IPAfont|⟨mi₂⟩}} ⟨mi₂⟩, {{unk|ja|nocap=1}} unknown Head templates: {{ja-noun|み}} 箕(み) • (mi)
