Adjective [Latvian]

IPA: [kɾàːʃɲs] Audio: lv-riga-krāšņs.ogg
Etymology: Borrowed from Old East Slavic красьнъ (krasĭnŭ, “beautiful”) (compare Russian кра́сный (krásnyj, “red”)), from the same Proto-Indo-European stem as krāsa (“color”) (q.v.). Borrowed before the 13th century in the form krāsns (first mentioned in 16th- and 17th-century sources), it became krāšņs in the second half of the 18th century, with a palatalized šņ either because of its adverbial form krāšņi, from krāsni, or because of the influence of Russian красный (krasnyj), perhaps re-borrowed as *krāsnij; in either case, the preceding i would have been the cause of the palatalization. "etymology_text": "Borrowed from Old East Slavic красьнъ (krasĭnŭ, “beautiful”) (compare Russian кра́сный (krásnyj, “red”)), from the same Proto-Indo-European stem as krāsa (“color”) (q.v.). Borrowed before the 13th century in the form krāsns (first mentioned in 16th- and 17th-century sources), it became krāšņs in the second half of the 18th century, with a palatalized šņ either because of its adverbial form krāšņi, from krāsni, or because of the influence of Russian красный (krasnyj), perhaps re-borrowed as *krāsnij; in either case, the preceding i would have been the cause of the palatalization.",
