Noun [Old Armenian]

Etymology: The original spelling is հաւտ (hawt), from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂- (“to shepherd”) grown with -d-, as in Persian پاده (pâda, “flock”). Alternatively, connected with հատանեմ (hatanem, “to cut”) and հօտ (hōt, “cut-off branch”) with a semantic development ‘to cut, divide’ → ‘a division of the flock’ → ‘flock of sheep’.
