Noun [Latvian]

Etymology: Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from Latin Germānus, a term introduced by Julius Caesar from a Gaulish word for a group of tribes living in Northeastern Gaul (probably originally the name of one of these tribes). The original meaning was probably “neighbor” (cf. Old Irish gairm (“neighbor”)), or perhaps “noisy” (cf. Old Irish garim (“to shout”)).
