"Étymologie incertaine :\n:# Origine orientale via l’espagnol macabro, issu de l’arabe مَقَابِر, maqābir (« tombes, cimetières »), pluriel de مَقْبَرَة, maqbara', ou مَقْبُرَة, maqbura, ou de مَقْبَر, maqbar ; cette étymologie arabe est rejetée par les linguistes romans comme étant sans fondement ;\n:# Il semble préférable de voir en Macabré une variante du nom propre d’origine biblique Macchabée. Macabey, Maquabré, Makabré, etc., sont attestés comme nom de famille à partir de 1333, à Porrentruy, dès le douzième siècle. Macabré indiquant l’homme qui était considéré, à tort ou à raison, par Le Fèvre, comme l’inventeur du thème pictural ;\n:# On a encore supposé que la danse Macabré aurait été une danse liturgique, une procession dansée ou un mystère, représentant le martyre des sept frères Macchabées qui moururent l’un après l’autre pour leur foi (II Macc. 7), où les danseurs disparaissaient tour à tour pour signifier que chaque être humain doit subir la mort.
