La plupart du temps, ces maisons était possédées par les Marseillais qui les utilisaient comme lieu de résidence et de villégiature. Ce mot fait partie de la langue française au moins depuis Louis XIV qui déclara : « Nous avons remarqué que les Marseillais prisaient fort les jolies bastides. Nous avons voulu avoir la nôtre à l’entrée de ce grand port » (lire Fort Saint-Jean)."
