Noun

IPA: /kɐ.dɐ.liː/ [Vedic], /ˈkɐ.d̪ɐ.l̪iː/ [Classical]
Etymology: Traditionally considered a borrowing from Munda; compare Mundari कदळ (kadaḷ), Santali ᱠᱚᱮᱨᱚ (kôerô), Koda [script needed] (kɛɾa), Korku [script needed] (keɽe), Sora [script needed] (kintēn-ən). However, Hoogervorst suggests that the Munda languages borrowed from Indo-Aryan rather than the other way around, and that Indo-Aryan ultimately borrowed this term from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qaʀutay, the latter which has yielded descendants in various languages of South and Southeast Asia. Compare Proto-Mon-Khmer *t₁luəjʔ, whence Semai telèy, and Proto-Tai *kluəjꟲ, whence Thai กล้วย (glûai).
