Etymology: From Middle Iranian *varzāk, which, according to Asatryan, is an agent noun from the root *warj- (“to do; to work”). For the suffix see -ակ (-ak). Byzantine Greek βάρζα (bárza) found in the Suda lexicon as a synonym of ψάλτρια (psáltria, “female harper”) is of the same origin.
