Noun

IPA: [pùlkstɛnis]
Etymology: There are various theories about the origin of this word, originally meaning “church bell.” The most likely to be true derives it from an unattested verb *pulsēt (“to produce sound”) (compare archaic pulstens, dialectal pulstenis (“bell”), pulkstiens (“bell sound, toll”)) > *pulksēt with an epenthetic k and the nominalizing suffix -enis. Other suggestions include deriving pulkstenis from pulks (“regiment, military unit”) and stenēt (“to groan, to make noise”) (i.e., the regiment's noisy one); from borrowed terms, Middle Low German puls (“hit, blow, touch”) and stēn (“stone”); from an old verb pult meaning “to fall” (since that which strikes a bell “falls” on it); from a compound of puls- and sitiens, sitenis “blow”, with an intrusive k. The word was already mentioned in a 1585 catechism (as stundu pulksten(is), “hour bell,” i.e., “clock”) Etymology templates: {{m|lv|*pulsēt||to produce sound}} *pulsēt (“to produce sound”), {{m|lv|pulstens}} pulstens, {{m|lv|pulstenis||bell}} pulstenis (“bell”), {{m|lv|pulkstiens||bell sound, toll}} pulkstiens (“bell sound, toll”), {{m|lv|*pulksēt}} *pulksēt, {{m|lv|pulkstenis}} pulkstenis, {{m|lv|pulks||regiment, military unit}} pulks (“regiment, military unit”), {{m|lv|stenēt||to groan, to make noise}} stenēt (“to groan, to make noise”), {{uder|lv|gml|puls||hit, blow, touch}} Middle Low German puls (“hit, blow, touch”), {{m|gml|stēn||stone}} stēn (“stone”), {{m|lv|pult}} pult Head templates: {{head|lv|noun|g=m|g2=|head=|sort=}} pulkstenis m, {{lv-noun|m|2nd}} pulkstenis m (2nd declension) Inflection templates: {{lv-decl-noun|pulkste|is|2nd||n|ņ|extrawidth=-60}}, {{lv-decl-noun-2|pulkste|is|4=|5=n|6=ņ|7=|8=|drop-v=|keep-s=|x=-60}}, {{lv-decl-noun-table|pulkstenis|pulksteņi|pulksteni|pulksteņus|pulksteņa|pulksteņu|pulkstenim|pulksteņiem|pulksteni|pulksteņiem|pulkstenī|pulksteņos|pulksteni|pulksteņi|type=2nd declension|x=-60}} Forms: declension-2 [table-tags], pulkstenis [nominative, singular], pulksteņi [nominative, plural], pulksteni [accusative, singular], pulksteņus [accusative, plural], pulksteņa [genitive, singular], pulksteņu [genitive, plural], pulkstenim [dative, singular], pulksteņiem [dative, plural], pulksteni [instrumental, singular], pulksteņiem [instrumental, plural], pulkstenī [locative, singular], pulksteņos [locative, plural], pulksteni [singular, vocative], pulksteņi [plural, vocative]

"etymology_text": "There are various theories about the origin of this word, originally meaning “church bell.” The most likely to be true derives it from an unattested verb *pulsēt (“to produce sound”) (compare archaic pulstens, dialectal pulstenis (“bell”), pulkstiens (“bell sound, toll”)) > *pulksēt with an epenthetic k and the nominalizing suffix -enis. The word was already mentioned in a 1585 catechism (as stundu pulksten(is), “hour bell,” i.e., “clock”)",
