Adjective

IPA: [muôdɾs] Audio: lv-riga-modrs.ogg
Etymology: From the same stem as verb most (“to wake up”) (< *muod-ti), with an extra -r: *muod-ra-s > modrs. A parallel form without the -r yielded možs (q.v.). In the 17th century, modrs had the meaning of “wise, intelligent”, now gudrs; the current meaning became dominant in the 18th century. Ultimately from Proto-Balto-Slavic *mandras, from Proto-Indo-European *men(s)dʰh₁- (“wisdom”). Cognates include Lithuanian mañdras, mandrùs (“vigilant, alert; smart, wise, cunning; proud, arrogant”), Old Church Slavonic мѫдръ (mǫdrŭ, “wise”), Russian му́дрый (múdryj), Bulgarian мъ́дър (mǎ́dǎr), Czech moudrý, Polish mądry, Old High German muntar (“quick, lively, alert”), German munter (“lively, cheerful, awake”) Etymology templates: {{inh|lv|ine-bsl-pro|*mandras}} Proto-Balto-Slavic *mandras, {{der|lv|ine-pro|*men(s)dʰh₁-|t=wisdom}} Proto-Indo-European *men(s)dʰh₁- (“wisdom”), {{cog|lt|mañdras}} Lithuanian mañdras, {{cog|cu|мѫдръ||wise}} Old Church Slavonic мѫдръ (mǫdrŭ, “wise”), {{cog|ru|му́дрый}} Russian му́дрый (múdryj), {{cog|bg|мъ́дър}} Bulgarian мъ́дър (mǎ́dǎr), {{cog|cs|moudrý}} Czech moudrý, {{cog|pl|mądry}} Polish mądry, {{cog|goh|muntar||quick, lively, alert}} Old High German muntar (“quick, lively, alert”), {{cog|de|munter||lively, cheerful, awake}} German munter (“lively, cheerful, awake”) Head templates: {{head|lv|adjective|||definite|modrais|comparative|modrāks|superlative|vismodrākais|adverb|modri|cat2=|cat3=}} modrs (definite modrais, comparative modrāks, superlative vismodrākais, adverb modri), {{lv-adj|modr}} modrs (definite modrais, comparative modrāks, superlative vismodrākais, adverb modri) Inflection templates: {{lv-decl-adj|modr|extrawidth=-100}} Forms: modrais [definite], modrāks [comparative], vismodrākais [superlative], modri [adverb], no-table-tags [table-tags], modrs [indefinite, masculine, nominative, singular], modri [indefinite, masculine, nominative, plural], modra [feminine, indefinite, nominative, singular], modras [feminine, indefinite, nominative, plural], modru [accusative, indefinite, masculine, singular], modrus [accusative, indefinite, masculine, plural], modru [accusative, feminine, indefinite, singular], modras [accusative, feminine, indefinite, plural], modra [genitive, indefinite, masculine, singular], modru [genitive, indefinite, masculine, plural], modras [feminine, genitive, indefinite, singular], modru [feminine, genitive, indefinite, plural], modram [dative, indefinite, masculine, singular], modriem [dative, indefinite, masculine, plural], modrai [dative, feminine, indefinite, singular], modrām [dative, feminine, indefinite, plural], modru [indefinite, instrumental, masculine, singular], modriem [indefinite, instrumental, masculine, plural], modru [feminine, indefinite, instrumental, singular], modrām [feminine, indefinite, instrumental, plural], modrā [indefinite, locative, masculine, singular], modros [indefinite, locative, masculine, plural], modrā [feminine, indefinite, locative, singular], modrās [feminine, indefinite, locative, plural], - [indefinite, masculine, singular, vocative], - [indefinite, masculine, plural, vocative], - [feminine, indefinite, singular, vocative], - [feminine, indefinite, plural, vocative]

Cognates include Lithuanian mañdras, mandrùs (“vigilant, alert; smart, wise, cunning; proud, arrogant”), Old Church Slavonic мѫдръ (mǫdrŭ, “wise”), Russian му́дрый (múdryj), Bulgarian мъ́дър (mǎ́dǎr), Czech moudrý, Polish mądry, Old High German muntar (“quick, lively, alert”), German munter (“lively, cheerful, awake”)",
