The perfect form nōvī might serve as a replacement for an earlier root aorist from Proto-Indo-European *ǵnéh₃t. The PIE adjective *ǵn̥h₃tós (“known”) should have yielded *nātus, which would have been identical with nātus. It is possible that the full-grade vocalism was introduced to avoid homophony. Cognate with Ancient Greek γιγνώσκω (gignṓskō).",
