Etymology: From reconstructed Middle Korean *볻 (*pwot), with suffix 이 (-i, noun suffix). See Yukjin dialect 보대 (bodae, “vulva”), which was a dialect that did not undergo palatalization of /t/. Cognate with Jeju 보뎅이 (bodeng'i, “vulva”) and probably also Japanese 陰 (hoto, “id.”), historically from Old Japanese *potə. Compare also 불 (bul, “genitalia”), surviving in fossilized form in words such as 불알 (bural, “testicle”).
