Attested at least since a portion of the Shoku Nihongi dated to 782. May also be encountered with the reading shindō with rendaku. However, this reading is missing from some modern references, or is indicated as an alternative reading. The 1603 Nippo Jisho also only lists xintǒ without rendaku.
