Cognate with Dutch adem and Old English ǣþm. Doublet of Odem. Final unstressed -em (except in the adjectival dative ending) regularly becomes -en in Late Middle High German; compare Boden, Faden. The corresponding form āten is attested, but did not establish itself because of the influence of the verb atmen.
