Verb

IPA: /ˈjœy̯.xən/ Audio: Nl-juichen.ogg
Etymology: Cognate with German jauchzen. The further etymology is not entirely clear. If the Dutch and German words are inherited from a common source, the word would be of Proto-West Germanic origin at the very latest, although it has been suggested that the Dutch word could represent a borrowing from German. Others propose an derivation from Proto-Indo-European *iū (“exclamation; yow!”), an onomatopoeic exclamation present in several Indo-European branches (see Latin iūbilō (“to cheer”) for more).
