"ὑπήνη" meaning in Ancient Greek

See ὑπήνη in All languages combined, or Wiktionary

Noun

IPA: /hy.pɛ̌ː.nɛː/, /yˈpi.ni/, /iˈpi.ni/, /hy.pɛ̌ː.nɛː/ (note: 5ᵗʰ BCE Attic), /(h)yˈpe̝.ne̝/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /yˈpi.ni/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /yˈpi.ni/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /iˈpi.ni/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan)
Etymology: Ending like ἀπήνη (apḗnē), λαμπήνη (lampḗnē) and ἀνθρήνη (anthrḗnē). Traditionally explained as a compound of Proto-Indo-European *upó (“under, below”) and a root common to Sanskrit आन (āna, “face, mouth, nose”). Yet this etymology is semantically unsatisfactory and formally difficult. Alternatively, the word has often been considered to be Pre-Greek, in view of the typical substrate suffix -ήνη.
