"φλοιός" meaning in Ancient Greek

See φλοιός in All languages combined, or Wiktionary

Noun

IPA: /pʰloi̯.ós/, /ɸlyˈos/, /fliˈos/, /pʰloi̯.ós/ (note: 5ᵗʰ BCE Attic), /pʰlyˈos/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /ɸlyˈos/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /flyˈos/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /fliˈos/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan)
Etymology: Formally, it belongs to φλέω (phléō, “to abound”) together with φλόος (phlóos, “skin, slough”). Semantically, the connection with φλέω (phléō) is clear in ὑπέρφλοιος (hupérphloios, “luxuriant, succulent”). Frisk thinks that the rind may have received its name from its being rich in flesh and juice, as opposed to the wood underneath. However, it could also be from the same Pre-Greek of φλέως (phléōs, “Ravenna grass”), which is suggested for φλέω (phléō) too. "etymology_text": "Formally, it belongs to φλέω (phléō, “to abound”) together with φλόος (phlóos, “skin, slough”). Semantically, the connection with φλέω (phléō) is clear in ὑπέρφλοιος (hupérphloios, “luxuriant, succulent”). Frisk thinks that the rind may have received its name from its being rich in flesh and juice, as opposed to the wood underneath. However, it could also be from the same Pre-Greek of φλέως (phléōs, “Ravenna grass”), which is suggested for φλέω (phléō) too.",
