Noun

IPA: /ɡɔː.ryː.tós/, /ɣo.ryˈtos/, /ɣo.riˈtos/, /ɡɔː.ryː.tós/ (note: 5ᵗʰ BCE Attic), /ɡo.ryˈtos/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /ɣo.ryˈtos/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /ɣo.ryˈtos/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /ɣo.riˈtos/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan)
Etymology: According to Benveniste, a loanword from a Scythian compound that contains the word for 'cow' (compare Proto-Indo-Iranian *gā́wš) as a first member. The interpretation of the second member is unclear, however we can hardly identify it with Persian روده (rude, “intestine”) and interpret the whole compound as 'cow-hide'. Alternatively, Lubotsky suggests that the word may derive from a Proto-Iranian source similar to Sanskrit वरूतृ (varūtṛ, “one who wards off or protects”), thus explaining the long ῡ (ū). Remains uncertain.
