Verb [Central Franconian]

IPA: /ˈʃʋaːdə/ Forms: schwaat [present, singular, third-person], jeschwaat [participle, past]
Etymology: The senses “to slap” and “to eat a lot” are derived from the noun Schwaat (“pork rind”), from Middle High German swart, from Old High German *swarta, from Proto-Germanic *swarduz. The sense “to prate” may be derived from this because the semantic fields “eat” ↔ “open one's mouth” ↔ “speak” often overlap. However, two other stems suggest themselves additionally: 1.) Middle High German schwadern, swateren (“to prate”), and 2.) Middle High German swetzen (“to prate”), related to the former, whence Central Franconian schwätze, whose past participle is geschwat in many Moselle Franconian dialects (compare Luxembourgish schwätzen).
