Noun [Latin]

IPA: /ˈmuː.nus/ [Classical], [ˈmuːnʊs̠] [Classical], /ˈmu.nus/ (note: modern Italianate Ecclesiastical), [ˈmuːnus] (note: modern Italianate Ecclesiastical)
Etymology: From Proto-Italic *moinos. Like mūnia (“duties”), it is derived from Proto-Indo-European *moy-nós, from *mey- (“change, swap”). As is the case with such derivatives as "municipality", and "immunity", the concept of trading goods and services in a way that conforms to a society's laws is quite pertinent to this term. From the addition of the "com-" prefix came commūnis (“common, public”), which is cognate to Proto-Germanic *gamainiz (“shared, communal, public”). The semantic shift to 'gift' is explained by Sextus Pompeius Festus thus: * Etymology templates: {{inh|la|itc-pro|*moinos}} Proto-Italic *moinos, {{m|la|mūnia||duties}} mūnia (“duties”), {{der|la|ine-pro||*moy-nós}} Proto-Indo-European *moy-nós, {{m|ine-pro|*mey-||change, swap}} *mey- (“change, swap”), {{m|la|commūnis||common, public}} commūnis (“common, public”), {{cog|gem-pro|*gamainiz||shared, communal, public}} Proto-Germanic *gamainiz (“shared, communal, public”) Head templates: {{la-noun|mūnus/mūner<3>}} mūnus n (genitive mūneris); third declension Inflection templates: {{la-ndecl|mūnus/mūner<3>}} Forms: mūnus [canonical, neuter], mūneris [genitive], no-table-tags [table-tags], mūnus [nominative, singular], mūnera [nominative, plural], mūneris [genitive, singular], mūnerum [genitive, plural], mūnerī [dative, singular], mūneribus [dative, plural], mūnus [accusative, singular], mūnera [accusative, plural], mūnere [ablative, singular], mūneribus [ablative, plural], mūnus [singular, vocative], mūnera [plural, vocative]
