Etymology: Haplology of broterė́lis ‘little brother’, diminutive of *bróter- (in broterỹstė ‘brotherhood’, bróterautis ‘to fraternize, ally’), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *brā́ˀtē (compare Old Prussian brāti), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰréh₂tēr. Another haplological form is dialectal brotis ‘brother’, but with preserved -t-. Parallel formation in Latvian brālis.
