Etymology: From Proto-Albanian *bālwā, close to Latin bēlua (“beast”) (cf. Italian belva and Romanian balaur. According to price, they might have be of Dacian origin. It could also be of Pre-indo-European origins alongside Greek πελώριον (pelórion).
