Noun [Proto-Germanic]

Etymology: Undetermined; Kroonen suggests a relationship to Hittite 𒄩𒀊𒁉𒈾𒀸 (ḫa-ap-pé-na-aš /ḫappenas/, “fire pit, oven”, gen. sg.), so that both would be from a Proto-Indo-European amphikinetic l/n-stem *h₂épōl or *h₂épl̥, genitive *h₂pnós (compare the derivation of *aplaz). On the other hand, this Hittite term may instead be related to a widespread Wanderwort from which may have come also Germanic *ufnaz, or alternatively from a root *h₃ep- (“to bake”). Likewise, a substrate origin for *aflaz cannot be ruled out.
