Noun [German]

IPA: /tɔrˈnɪstər/, [tɔʁˈnɪs.tɐ], [tɔ(ɐ̯)-] Audio: De-Tornister.ogg
Etymology: 17th century, from slightly earlier Tanister, from Czech tanystra (now obsolete), from Hungarian tanisztra (and variants, now tarisznya). Further from Byzantine Greek τάγιστρον (tágistron, “nosebag”), or Latin canistrum (“wicker basket”), or a merger of both. The change of the first syllable from Ta- to Tor- in German is probably from dialectal influence (either directly or by way of hypercorrection).
