Noun [German]

IPA: /ˈpʁɪt͡ʃə/ Audio: De-Pritsche.ogg
Etymology: From Middle High German *britze (attested in derivatives, simplex 15th c.), from Old High German britissa (“thin plank”), derived from bret (Proto-Germanic *bredą, whence modern Brett) + -issa (Proto-Germanic *-isjō). P- for initial b- and -tsch- for -tz- are sporadic developments, here reinforced by onomatopoeia. The predominant sense in older Modern German was that of a baton.
