Noun [Laz]

IPA: /ˈlɑzi/ Forms: lazi [romanization], Lazi [romanization]
Etymology: The word Laz as an ethnic term is first mentioned in the Latin form of Lazi and Ancient Greek Λαζοί (Lazoí) and Λᾶζαι (Lâzai) in Pliny's Naturalis Historia. "Laz" must have been a name adopted over time by more than one Colchian tribe, as Procopius also stated. The origin is uncertain. * Kiria et al. reconstruct Proto-Georgian-Zan *laž- deriving the ethnonym from Georgian and saying the Zan equivalent is preserved in Urartian 𒁹𒇻𒌑𒃻𒀀 (ᵐlu-ú-šá-a /Luša/). Note that the ethnonyms Laz or Chan did not exist in Old Georgian: the Laz were referred to as Mingrelians. Georgian ლაზი (lazi) and Georgian ჭანი (č̣ani) must have entered the Language recently, probably after the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878) when some parts of Lazona were taken by Russia. * According to Nikolai Marr from Svan ლა- (la-) + ზან (zan). "etymology_text": "The word Laz as an ethnic term is first mentioned in the Latin form of Lazi and Ancient Greek Λαζοί (Lazoí) and Λᾶζαι (Lâzai) in Pliny's Naturalis Historia. \"Laz\" must have been a name adopted over time by more than one Colchian tribe, as Procopius also stated. The origin is uncertain.\n* Kiria et al. reconstruct Proto-Georgian-Zan *laž- deriving the ethnonym from Georgian and saying the Zan equivalent is preserved in Urartian 𒁹𒇻𒌑𒃻𒀀 (ᵐlu-ú-šá-a /Luša/). Note that the ethnonyms Laz or Chan did not exist in Old Georgian: the Laz were referred to as Mingrelians. Georgian ლაზი (lazi) and Georgian ჭანი (č̣ani) must have entered the Language recently, probably after the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878) when some parts of Lazona were taken by Russia.\n* According to Nikolai Marr from Svan ლა- (la-) + ზან (zan).",
