The plausible etymologies proposed in the literature are:\n* Per Turner, from a substrate term that has been Sanskritised + -त्थ (-ttha, “wood”), a suffix also found in कपित्थ (kapittha, “bael tree”), डित्थ (ḍittha, “wooden elephant”), and डवित्थ (ḍavittha, “wooden antelope”). In this case, the first element is probably not अश्व (aśva, “horse”).\n* Per Mayrhofer, compare Proto-Iranian *HacwaHastiš (“alfalfa, lucerne”, literally “horse food”). If truly cognate, the Sanskrit term must have originally been *अश्व-द्-थ (aśva-d-tha), but it is not easy to reconcile the suffix with expected Proto-Indo-European *h₁éd-t-is (“food”), nor is the ashvattha tree typically used as horse food. The expected cognate of the Iranic term would be *अश्वत्ति (aśvatti).\nMayrhofer lists some other attempted Indo-European etymologies, none of which are convincing:\n* Per Adalbert Kuhn and quoted by Uhlenbeck, a Prakritism from अश्व (aśva, “horse”) + स्थ (stha, “stand”). This etymology arises from a story in the Brāhmaṇas about the tree being a receptacle for the horse-form of the god अग्नि (agni), and thus probably a post-hoc explanation.\n* Per Fay, a compound from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ékʷeh₂ (“water”) + *dh₃tós (“given”).\n* Per Lassen, a Prakritism from अ- (a-) + स्वस्थ (svastha), i.e. \"not self-dependent\", referring to the continual shivering of its leaves. Emeneau supports this etymology but rather in reference to the tree's epiphytism; he later withdrew his support and instead favoured a substrate borrowing.\nThe given name अश्वत्थामन् (aśvatthāman) is unrelated according to Mayrhofer.", "forms": [ { "form": "aśvatthá", "tags": [ "romanization" ] }, { "form": "no-table-tags", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "table-tags" ] }, { "form": The plausible etymologies proposed in the literature are:\n* Per Turner, from a substrate term that has been Sanskritised + -त्थ (-ttha, “wood”), a suffix also found in कपित्थ (kapittha, “bael tree”), डित्थ (ḍittha, “wooden elephant”), and डवित्थ (ḍavittha, “wooden antelope”). Emeneau supports this etymology but rather in reference to the tree's epiphytism; he later withdrew his support and instead favoured a substrate borrowing.\nThe given name अश्वत्थामन् (aśvatthāman) is The plausible etymologies proposed in the literature are:\n* Per Turner, from a substrate term that has been Sanskritised + -त्थ (-ttha, “wood”), a suffix also found in कपित्थ (kapittha, “bael tree”), डित्थ (ḍittha, “wooden elephant”), and डवित्थ (ḍavittha, “wooden antelope”). Emeneau supports this etymology but rather in reference to the tree's epiphytism; he later withdrew his support and instead favoured a substrate borrowing.\nThe given name अश्वत्थामन् (aśvatthāman) is unrelated according to Mayrhofer.", "forms": [ { "form": "aśvatthá", "tags": [ "romanization" ] }, { "form": "no-table-tags", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "table-tags" ] }, { "form": "sa-decl-noun-m", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "inflection-template" ] }, { "form": "a-stem", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "class" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थः", "roman": "aśvattháḥ", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "nominative", "singular" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थौ", "roman": "aśvatthaú", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "dual", "nominative" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्था1", "roman": "aśvatthā́1", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "dual", "nominative" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थाः", "roman": "aśvatthā́ḥ", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "nominative", "plural" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थासः1", "roman": "aśvatthā́saḥ1", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "nominative", "plural" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थ", "roman": "áśvattha", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "singular", "vocative" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थौ", "roman": "áśvatthau", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "dual", "vocative" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्था1", "roman": "áśvatthā1", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "dual", "vocative" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थाः", "roman": "áśvatthāḥ", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "plural", "vocative" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थासः1", "roman": "áśvatthāsaḥ1", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "plural", "vocative" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थम्", "roman": "aśvatthám", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "accusative", "singular" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थौ", "roman": "aśvatthaú", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "accusative", "dual" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्था1", "roman": "aśvatthā́1", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "accusative", "dual" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थान्", "roman": "aśvatthā́n", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "accusative", "plural" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थेन", "roman": "aśvatthéna", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "instrumental", "singular" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थाभ्याम्", "roman": "aśvatthā́bhyām", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "dual", "instrumental" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थैः", "roman": "aśvatthaíḥ", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "instrumental", "plural" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थेभिः1", "roman": "aśvatthébhiḥ1", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "instrumental", "plural" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थाय", "roman": "aśvatthā́ya", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "dative", "singular" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थाभ्याम्", "roman": "aśvatthā́bhyām", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "dative", "dual" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थेभ्यः", "roman": "aśvatthébhyaḥ", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "dative", "plural" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थात्", "roman": "aśvatthā́t", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "ablative", "singular" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थाभ्याम्", "roman": "aśvatthā́bhyām", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "ablative", "dual" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थेभ्यः", "roman": "aśvatthébhyaḥ", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "ablative", "plural" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थस्य", "roman": "aśvatthásya", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "genitive", "singular" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थयोः", "roman": "aśvattháyoḥ", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "dual", "genitive" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थानाम्", "roman": "aśvatthā́nām", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "genitive", "plural" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थे", "roman": "aśvatthé", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "locative", "singular" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थयोः", "roman": "aśvattháyoḥ", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "dual", "locative" ] }, { "form": "अश्वत्थेषु", "roman": "aśvatthéṣu", "source": "declension", "tags": [ "locative", "plural" ] } ], "head_templates": [ { "args": { "g": "m", "tr": "aśvatthá" }, "expansion": "अश्वत्थ • (aśvatthá) stem, m", "name": "sa-noun" }, { "args": { "1": "sa", "2": "Vedic", "3": "Classical" }, "expansion": "(Vedic, Classical Sanskrit)", "name": "tlb" } ], "inflection_templates": [ { "args": { "1": "aśvatthá" }, "name": "sa-decl-noun-m" } ], "lang": "Sanskrit", "lang_code": "sa", "pos": "noun", "senses": [ { "examples": [ { "text": "c. 1200 BCE – 1000 BCE, Atharvaveda" }, { "text": "c. 700 BCE, Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa" } ], "glosses": [ "ashvattha, sacred fig (a tree of species Ficus religiosa)" ], "links": [ [ "ashvattha", "ashvattha" ], [ "sacred fig", "sacred fig" ], [ "Ficus religiosa", "Ficus religiosa#Translingual" ] ], "synonyms": [ { "word": "पिप्पल" }, { "word": "प्लक्ष" } ], "tags": [ "Classical-Sanskrit", "Vedic" ] }, { "categories": [ "Sanskrit terms with quotations" ], "examples": [ { "ref": "c. 1700 BCE – 1200 BCE, Ṛgveda 1.135.8", "roman": "Ride hither to the offering of the pleasant juice, the holy Fig-tree which victorious priests surround: victorious be they still for us. "expansion": "substrate", "name": "bor" } ], "etymology_text": "Uncertain. Emeneau supports this etymology but rather in reference to the tree's epiphytism; he later withdrew his support and instead favoured a substrate borrowing.\nThe given name अश्वत्थामन् (aśvatthāman) is
