Proper name [Assyrian Neo-Aramaic]

IPA: [ʔaːʃiːθaː] [Standard], [ʔaːʃiːtaː] (note: Urmia) Forms: ܐܵܫܝܼܬ݂ܵܐ [canonical], āšīṯā [romanization], ܥܵܫܝܼܬ݂ܵܐ [alternative]
Etymology: Inherited from Aramaic, borrowed from Akkadian 𒀀𒊓𒄿𒌅 (/asītu/, “tower, stack”). From the older meaning “column, wall, mound,” and then specialized into “avalanche”. Described already in Toma Audo’s “Treasure of the Syriac Language” with the meaning of “avalanche” in the classical variant form Classical Syriac ܐܸܫܝܼܬ݂ܵܐ (“ʔiššīṯā”), likely as a vernacularism. As a place name, attested at least as early as the 12th century as the name of a village in the region of Tyari. Compare Arabic آسِيَة (ʔāsiya) and Hebrew אָשְׁיָה (ʾošyâ). Compare Arabic آسِيَة (ʔāsiya) and Hebrew אָשְׁיָה (ʾošyâ).",

Compare Arabic آسِيَة (ʔāsiya) and Hebrew אָשְׁיָה (ʾošyâ).",

Compare Arabic آسِيَة (ʔāsiya) and Hebrew אָשְׁיָה (ʾošyâ).",
