Verb [Erzya]

Forms: eŕams [romanization], эри [present], эрясь [past]
Etymology: From Proto-Mordvinic *eŕams, possibly inherited from Proto-Uralic *elä- (“to live”), but both the vowel e and the consonant ŕ are irregular. Keresztes suggests an irregular development due to avoidance of homonymy with the prohibitve auxiliary иля (iľa, “don't”). Compare also Estonian ära (from Proto-Finnic *älä-) with a similar phonetic shift *l > r. Alternatively, related to Erzya эрзя (erźa), which may derive from *irkä~*ürkä (“man, son, boy”).
