Noun [Ukrainian]

Forms: черенки́ [canonical], čerenký [romanization]
Etymology: Plural of Ukrainian черенка (čerenka, “one type symbol; knife handle”), from черен (čeren, “handle, stem”) + -ка (-ka), from Old East Slavic черенъ (čerenŭ), from Proto-Slavic *černъ. Cognate with Ukrainian корінь (korinʹ). The semantic development of черенка into "a single font glyph" is not fully clear. Possibly as follows: "handle; stem" → "[metal] knife handle" → "long metal handle, stem" → "metal stem that holds a typographic symbol". The very first printing presses used a set of metal glyphs that looked like long thin stems with a convex symbols on the tips. Etymology templates: {{cog|uk|черенка|t=one type symbol; knife handle}} Ukrainian черенка (čerenka, “one type symbol; knife handle”), {{af|uk|черен|-ка|t1=handle, stem}} черен (čeren, “handle, stem”) + -ка (-ka), {{inh|uk|orv|черенъ}} Old East Slavic черенъ (čerenŭ), {{inh|uk|sla-pro|*černъ}} Proto-Slavic *černъ, {{cog|uk|корінь}} Ukrainian корінь (korinʹ), {{m|de|Typen}} Typen Head templates: {{uk-noun|черенки́|f-in-p}} черенки́ • (čerenký) f inan pl (genitive [please provide], plural only)
