Noun [Greek]

IPA: /d͡ze.ɾeˈmes/
Etymology: From Ottoman Turkish جریمه (cerîme, “unjust fine”) through Persian جریمه (jarime, “fine”), ultimately from Arabic جَرِيمَة (jarīma, “crime, offense”) and perhaps under the semantic influence of Arabic غَرَامَة (ḡarāma, “fine, penalty”). Compare the Turkish cereme descendant from the Ottoman usage of the term with the same meaning of "unjust fine, damage to be paid due to someone other's fault" as in the sense borrowed into Greek.
