Proper name [Czech]

IPA: [ˈr̝ɛpt͡ʃiːn]
Rhymes: -ɛptʃiːn Etymology: From personal name Řepka + possessive suffix -ín, meaning "Řepka's property". The name Řepka comes from Old Czech řěpka, which is a diminutive of řěpa (“beet”). Historical spelling of the name was very varied. The oldest written evidence is Latin locative form Repsine in 1131, some other occurring variants were Reppsyn (1213), Rzepssinie (locative, 1532), Ržepschein (1676) or Řeptschein (1846). It is sometimes typical that names beginning with R or Ř received H as an initial consonant, which occurred with this name too, resulting in the forms like Hržebczin (1609) or Hřebčjn (1846), causing also a meaning shift towards otherwise unrelated word hřebčín (“stud farm”). That is why folk etymology sometimes also derived the name from hřebec (“stud”). Řepčín belongs to the group of toponyms in the close surrounding of Olomouc suffixed with -ín (most of which are nowadays parts of Olomouc), compare Břuchotín, Droždín, Hejčín, Hněvotín, Neředín, Slavonín or Třebčín.
