Verb

IPA: /fərˈlʊər/ Audio: LL-Q14196 (afr)-Oesjaar-verloor.wav Forms: verloor [present], verlorende [participle, present], verloor [participle, past]
Etymology: From Dutch verloren, past participle of verliezen. Afrikaans verb stems are usually derived from Dutch infinitives, but occasionally from other forms. In this case, the past participle is due to the fact that one speaks more often about something one has lost than something one is about to lose. Compare to this the Swedish verb förlora, which was similarly borrowed from the Middle Low German past participle rather than the present or infinitive. Also compare this to the English adjective forlorn, the past participle of the obsolete verb forlese.
