Etymology: [2] abgeleitet von [1]: Römische Soldaten und Beamte erhielten eine Ration Salz, das Salarium (in der Langform auch Salarium Argentum), für ihre Reisen — etymologisch zu dem Adjektiv salarius ^(→ la) („zum Salz gehörig“), dieses von dem Substantiv sāl ^(→ la) „Salz“. Dieses wurde später in Geld umgewandelt. Hieraus leitet sich auch der deutsche Begriff Salär für „Lohn“ und „Gehalt“ ab. Salarium ist also gewissermaßen der Vorgängerbegriff für Gehalt oder Salär.
