Selon Lameen Souag, le mot est une altération dialectale de l’expression بالجُزافِ, biljouzef (« en vrac»), attestée dans le Kitab al-Ayn (Le livre source), premier dictionnaire d’arabe composé par Khalil ibn Ahmad au 8e siècle. Bezef se disait pour la vente sans poids ni mesure de tout produit quantifiable, d’où le sens courant de « beaucoup». Quoique le mot soit vieux en arabe, Khalil ibn Ahmad croit qu’il s'agirait d’un emprunt. On peut l’apparenter au persan گزاف, kazzaf qui signifie (« cher ») et à l’assyrien (ܓܙܦܐ), kazzafa de même sens.",
