Proper name

IPA: [ton˧˧ tʰət̚˧˦] [Hà-Nội], [toŋ˧˧ tʰək̚˦˧˥] [Huế], [toŋ˧˧ tʰək̚˦˥] [Hồ-Chí-Minh-City]
Etymology: Sino-Vietnamese word from 尊室, composed of 尊 (“august”) and 室 (“chamber”), originally a non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 宗室 (“imperial chamber(lain)”, SV: Tông Thất), with tông perhaps euphemistically replaced with tôn to avoid referencing Emperor Thiệu Trị, whose taboo name was Nguyễn Phúc Miên Tông. A name prescribed by Emperor Minh Mạng upon male descendants of the Nguyễn Phúc lineage. Compare Tôn Nữ and tôn giáo.
