"desjatin" meaning in Swedish

Noun

Etymology: Swedish transcription of the plural form of Russian десяти́на (desjatína), based on деся́тый (desjátyj, “one-tenth”) and де́сять (désjatʹ, “ten”). It is called one-tenth because it was originally 1/10 of a verst squared. However, in 1753 it was regulated that one desyatina was 2400 square са́жень (sáženʹ), са́же́нь (sážénʹ, “fathom”) or 1.0925 hectares. Since 1 verst = 1066.8 metres and 1 sazhen = 1/500 of a verst = 2.1336 metres, this makes the desyatina = 0.96 × the square of 1/10 verst.
